The Decision to Serve

Who I become in life has been primarily driven by one thing: my decision to serve someone or something.  As a father, I fully took on a role to serve.  I assumed that the people served by that role would be my kids.  As a businessperson, I believed serving my business would benefit the business.  And as a husband, I understood that learning my wife’s needs would likely enrich her life.

What I couldn’t know, however, was that serving others would continually unlock things inside of me and help me discover what I could become. For that, I’m humbled and truly grateful.

A terrific business teacher I’ve learned from, Keith Cunningham, once said he was driven by this one thought:  my greatest fear is to meet the man I could have become.

I have lived long enough to find a key for me to challenge myself to become more than I hoped for.
